Q1: Does the loo smell?

One of the most common misconceptions about compost toiletsis that they emit bad odours. Our loo uses two sealed chambers which, when the hatch is closed, produce no perceptable odours even from up close. If the hatch is left open, there is still very little odour - the reason for this is because the urine is diverted to a seperate sealed storage tank where it is diluted with rainwater. It is the combination faeces and urine that produce most of the foul smell people associate with compost toilets.

Q2: Can you use loo roll?

Yes. It is perfectly fine to put loo roll in the drum, but not anything else... no sanitary towels, nappies, condoms or cotton buds. And especially no bleach or other chlorine-based cleaners, for they will kill the beneficial microbes and cause the loo to cease decomposition, resulting in bad smells and overloaded chambers.

Q3: Do you need electricity in the shower?

The shower doesn't require any power to operate, all you need is a supply of cold water. If there is no mains water available, contact us for advice on how to capture rainwater. There is an electric immersion heater in most of the reclaimed hot water tanks which, if you have power available, could provide useful backup water heating when the solar panel proves insufficient.

Q4: Where can the units go?

The units are delivered on a trailer with a 4wd vehicle, thus they can be installed almost anywhere a 4wd can get to within reason. The ground must be flat or nearly so - if you're unsure, please contact us with site photos and we'll advise you of the options.

Q5: How do I order one, and how long does it take to arrive?

Once your precise requirements are ascertained, we'll send you a pro-forma invoice for 50% of the pre-delivery price. This can be paid by bank transfer or cheque. Once we've received your cleared deposit, we'll be able to give you a delivery date. Please be aware that whilst all effort is made to be accurate, by relying on reclaimed materials sometimes it's difficult to precisely guage the time of completion. Should there be any delays, you will be notified at least 14 days prior to the given installation date.
