Mobile Compost Toilet

The RotataLoo is a freestanding sealed-chamber dry composting toilet that's portable, odourless & easy to use

It requires no foundations or special composting facilities & utilises fast aerobic decomposition for rapid odourless faecal breakdown. It utilises a unique "fallow compost" solution to reduce the volume of the contents substantially - when one chamber is full the contents are given time to  substantially reduce in volume (and reach safe pathogen levels) by switching to the second chamber, and when breakdown in the first chamber is complete the compost can be emptied straight into a barrow. It also has a revolutionary method to aid decomposition & render the faeces harmless - the drums can be heated to pasteurise the manure, reducing pathogens to safe garden compost levels & substantially reducing the volume (see graph).  The urine is automatically diverted to a separate water butt, where it’s best mixed with rainwater & piped directly to a soakaway or as an excellent tree/garden fertiliser. This tank can be placed any  distance downstream from the loo, which is supplied with 2m of 25mm flexible pipe. The twin chambers are rotated manually to provide an even mixing of manure & sawdust, meaning the user doesn't need to put sawdust in with each use, a common cause of problems with urine diverting systems & also promoting uniform rapid aerobic decomposition.

Prices

A standard compost toilet unit is supplied and installed with a single seat assembly and one set of steps. There are two chambers and the unit can be supplied as two functional loos or adapted at a later date. The price includes installation & any necessary groundwork within reasonable limits (site needs to be fairly level & clear)

STANDARD UNIT 1995.00

Prices include taxes, installation & setup but not delivery, charged at 1.50 per loaded mile from factory SA66.

Option Summary

  1. Unit supplied and installed with 200Litre urine tank and guttering. This collects the rainwater from the roof of the standard unit and diverts it to the urine tank, diluting the urine & making it more suitable for use as a quality garden fertiliser. The overflow from the tank is piped to wherever is needed downstream from the lot via 25mm pipe (not supplied).
    STANDARD UNIT + 350.00

  2. The unit can be supplied as two active toilets, with two seat assemblies & steps, and a dividing screen separating the two sides. The lot can then be divided into male & female if desired, or cope with occasional heavy use.
    STANDARD UNIT + 495.00

  3. The step assembly can be supplied with extra broad tread & low riser, plus a handrail, for elderly or infirm users.
    STANDARD UNIT + 150.00

  4. A separate male urinal can be installed as a freestanding structure and piped into the toilets urine diversion system.
    STANDARD UNIT + 750.00

  5. The toilet can be supplied on permanent pneumatic wheels, allowing for easy mobility & portability.

Specification

The heavy duty welded steel frame is primed and double coated to withstand corrosion for years. All the timber is solid (no chipboard etc) and 80% of the materials are recycled:- the 8 hardened steel bearings; steel drums; stainless ventilators; doors & door furniture are all reclaimed. The triple membrane sides comprise a privicy screen, a water-repelling wind barrier, then the reed screen exterior, which is a material guaranteed for 10 years. Not only are the sides attractive, durable & maintenance-free, they have the added bonus of acting like net curtains, allowing the user to see out, and are very well ventilated. The roof is colourbond tin, with optional fascia + guttering. The solid construction means these units are very durable & yet require no permanent foundations and stand below 3m.

Installation

All our units are installed in the location of your choice, which can be almost anywhere. They require no permanent foundations, and as they stand below 3m (10 feet) they fall into the category of temporary portable units & thus require no special planning permission. The unit stands approx 3m high, 3m long and 1m wide, including steps, & it can sit on any ground type as long as it's a roughly level 4m x 1.5m.

Operation

The operator should spin the drums regularly & ensure some additional compostable material is placed in the drum. The exact quantity will depend on how heavy it’s used- as a guide for 2 adults using full time, one mug of wood shavings, wood ash & cheap flour are recommended fortnightly. This will significantly speed up the decomposition and ensure liquids are drawn off. When rotated the contents are thoroughly mixed. This is done by locking the hatch in place then unscrewing the handle, and unlocking the drum from the discretely located barrel lock. Each drum is mounted on 4 lubricated hardened steel bearings, which require re-greasing annually. To empty a full drum a wheelbarrow is pushed underneath from the side & the drum rotated with the hatch open. When one drum is full the seat & steps are easily moved to the empty drum to allow time for the full drums’ contents to fully decompose, a process which will be faster in the summer and can be facilitated by use of the thermophilic heater supplied, regular rotation of the contents & good management during use.

Composting

The contents will naturally undergo what is known as mesophilic decomposition with the aid of added composting agents supplied. To achieve max volume reduction & pathogen control, however, the contents are externally heated by the supplied heater unit placed underneath a full drum. Once the contents reach a certain temperature, thermophilic decomposition will begin and pathogen control is achieved, resulting in greater volume reduction as shown in the graph. This is known as pasteurisation. There is a heater plate on the base of each drum to help radiate the heat evenly.

Using

It is much easier to use than many compost loos as there is NO requirement for the user to add any special composting agent, a very common cause of problems. The user must push down the handle sticking out in front of them upon opening the door (it’s difficult to use without doing this, because the handle impedes the person from sitting until it is depressed). The only difference at this stage from conventional loos is that males are required to sit down even to urinate, which is clearly explained on the supplied sign (a separate matching male urinal is available if required).  Toilet paper can be deposited in the drum too, but it is important that nothing else be deposited by the user, especially wet wipes, sanitary towels etc.
