A standard solar washroom unit is supplied and installed with a 1 square metre flat plate solar collector, a tiled floor, a bench seat with hinged lid, cork panelled walls, a stained glass window, shower tray & shower head or mixer tap/shower fitting. The hot water system can be either direct or indirect- a direct system heats the water quicker but must be drained or otherwise protected during severe cold spells otherwise the water will freeze in the solar collector/pipes & cause irrepairable damage; indirect system can have antifreeze added but heats the water a little slower. There is also an electric immersion heater integral to the hot water tank, BUT you’ll have to arrange your own wiring/electricity supply.

Installation
All our units are fully tested & installed in the location of your choice, which can be almost anywhere. Price includes installation which requires access for a standard trailer & approx 3m x 2m level ground. A soakaway to allow safe disposal of the grey water waste should be constructed down hill of the proposed site - the specifications required will depend on the type & quantity of detergents & soaps used in the wash room. A company specialising in mobile reed bed systems can be contacted here: www.rentareedbed.co.uk.
They require no permanent foundations, and as they stand below 3m (10 feet) they fall into the category of temporary portable units & thus require no planning permission.
Each unit is bespoke, and the variety of options are detailed below. If you do not see the configuration you require, please contact us. For a map showing current installations, please click on "testimonials". There are units to view at our workshops in Pembrokeshire.
Operation
The water is heated by a 1 sq.m solar panel and an optional combination solid fuel burner. Both heating systems work independently & require no switching between them. The solar panel is extremely efficient due to its’ close proximity to the storage tank, and on a sunny day will heat the water to a pleasant temperature within 1 hour of the sun hitting the panel, regardless of the air temperature. Alternatively, a small fire lit in the morning will get the water warm quickly, then when the sun is up there will be enough hot water for over 20 good showers without needing to maintain the fire. There is a hinged lid on the heater, which can then be used for a tray of sauna rocks, creating steam. The interior is spacious enough for two adults and with an optional hinged bench seat for towels etc, or a handwash basin, or both if you require. The hot water system is an open-vented system with a 115 litre insulated copper tank located in the roof space. The solid fuel heater is an in-flue protected copper coil, providing ultra fast thermo-syphon & very efficient water heating, particularly suitable for short fires. The unit can be supplied with direct or indirect tank- if direct then the unit will need to be drained or otherwise protected from freezing, indirect systems can incorporate anti-freeze, but take a little longer to heat the water. Access to the plumbing is through the removeable roof sheet.Using
It's designed as a "wet room" & use requires no special tips or techniques. The walls, ceiling & floor are all water-repellent & will not rot or be damaged by soaking or steam. The floor is self-draining by use of a continuous drain around the inside where the walls & floor adjoin: this makes for very easy cleaning... simply use the shower to wash all the surfaces. For units with the solid fuel heater the double skinned flue and water heater coil are accessible inside the shower: when the fire is going well, the flue can get quite hot to touch, thus it is not recommended to leave young children unattended at such times. The hinged lid of the solid fuel heater is raised by use of a special tool for sauna and cooking access... the circular stove rings are first removed with the supplied handle then the sauna rocks (or pans) are placed in the supplied sauna tray & water ladled over them when hot. The firebox itself is accessed from the outside - it can accomodate lengths of branches or offcuts up to 700mm long. Once fully stoked, it will heat 115 litres of water in under an hour from cold - or less if the sun is shining on the solar collector, or there is still some residual heat in the water from the previous day. This has proved sufficient for over 20 continuous showers whilst the fire is going. It has the added bonus of raising the air temperature inside to a comfortable level.
